According to a report by MoneyLife Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan (whose last film project was in 2010) is still the highest tax paying heroine among her peers all of whom have had either film releases or brand endorsements in 2012. To be fair, Rai-Bachchan just added another brand to her kitty in the summer by becoming the international face of Kalyan Jewellers, a South Indian luxury jewellery brand that is intent on going international. This brand endorsement will reportedly earn her a whopping 20 crore INR (approximately 4 million USD) over the course of her two-year contract. It should also be noted that most top actresses in Bollywood endorse an average of ten brands whereas Rai-Bachchan only endorses four (L’Oreal, Lux, Longines & Kalyan) and these tax reports reflect the September quarter of 2012.
So what do well-wishers and naysayers in social media have to say about this? Well it’s a toss-up. Of course fans are glad to see their icon still portrayed as a key player in an industry where the shelf-life and career prospects of a married or knocking-on-forty actress are limited. Confused admirers (or as they are popularly known…haters) are thinking outside of the box and all over the place with their theories, some of whom I chatted with believe this is a PR move by Rai-Bachchan’s agents to prove that she is still an A-lister, some swear the figures must inaccurate because Rai-Bachchan has not worked in film since 2010 and the rest choose to extend their hatred by ill-commenting on the actress’s recent outing where she was photographed leaving for the US with her 10-month-old baby strapped to her chest. Sigh.
