In a recent chat with Filmfare Magazine, director Kabir Khan (Kabul Express, New York, Ek Tha Tiger) was quoted as saying:
“Katrina (Kaif) is one of my closest friends. I’m very fond of her. Some like her and some believe she’s not a good actor. The way she works is unbelievable. I’ve never seen anyone in this industry work so hard. It’s an endearing quality.” “She’s the fourth Khan of this industry. She’s unbelievably popular. Every single hero she works with has had the biggest opening with her.”
Kabir ji must be sippin’ on some wadka from what I can tell, here I was thinking that Saif Ali-Khan was the fourth Khan? Or am I sipping on some wadka along with Mr. Khan myself?
FACT CHECKING TIME
Imran Khan would beg to differ, his biggest openings (and biggest hits) have been ‘Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na’ & ‘Delhi Belly’ thus far none of which his ‘Mere Brother Ki Dulhan’ co-star Katrina appeared in.
Hrithik Roshan would beg to differ, his biggest openings (and biggest hits) thus far have been ‘Dhoom 2’, ‘Agneepath’ & ‘Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai’ none of which had Katrina in their line-up.
Akshay Kumar would beg to differ on the count of the record-breaking openings and successes of ‘Housefull,’ ‘Housefull 2’ & ‘Rowdy Rathore’ even as ‘OMG’ is slowly creeping towards another 100 crore hit for Akki as we speak. As a matter of fact, his first film with Katrina ‘Humko Deewana Kar Gaye’ was a flopbuster.
Iconic Amitabh Bachchan would beg to differ on the count of the flopbuster known as BOOM!
Super Villain Jackie Shroff would beg to differ on the count of the flopbuster known as BOOM!
Sunny, Bobby & Dharmendra Deol would be to differ on the count of their biggest combined opening (and biggest combined hit) being ‘Yamla Pagla Deewana’, in fact their combined film with Katrina ‘Apne’ did not open well at all and ended up only doing average business at the box office.
Zayed Khan would beg to differ as he tasted success without Katrina’s help with the superhit film ‘Main Hoon Na’ yet flopped badly with ‘Yuvvraaj’ co-starring Ms. Kaif, even his film ‘Blue’ which had Kaif in a cameo role performed poorly at the box office.
International actor Anil Kapoor is an icon on his own without the help of Katrina’s box office clout, should I even bother to list his accomplishments? I think I would run out of space as I would if I had to list Amitabh Bachchan’s accomplishments. But back to Kapoor, with Katrina’s help? Yeah, not so much on the count of the debacle that was ‘Yuvvraaj.’
Arjun Rampal would also beg to differ on the count of ‘Ra.One’ & ‘Om Shanti Om’ being his biggest openings and biggest hits thus far. ‘Raajneeti’ was a blockbuster but Arjun tasted success with previous films without the help of Katrina.
Ranbir Kapoor had big openings, big hits & big awards with ‘Bachna Ae Haseeno’ and ‘Wake Up Sid’ before Katrina came along with ‘Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani’ and last I checked, she wasn’t in his other hit films; ‘Anjaana Anjaani’ ‘Rockstar’ or ‘Barfi.’
Even John (Abraham) had ‘Dhoom’ before ‘New York’ while we’re stating facts.
For now… I think even SRK would also beg to differ on the count that ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ has not yet released and his biggest openings (and biggest hits) have been ‘My name is Khan’ (200+ crore worldwide gross), ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ (200+ crore worldwide gross and still running in selected theatres in India even after 17 years), ‘Om Shanti Om’ (200+ crore worldwide gross) & ‘Ra.One’ (240 crore worldwide gross) + the film in 2011 set the records for the biggest single-day net revenue and the biggest three-day opening weekend earned by a Bollywood film, breaking the previous records held by ‘Bodyguard.’
The bottom line is: Luck comes from God. For Kabir Khan to put so much weight on Katrina by ordaining her as “the fourth Khan” as if she is some kind of superhero with super powers to predict box office returns only opens her up to more professional criticism, more pressure to out-do herself at the box office and also sets her up for a downfall. Appreciate her for what she is and what she has accomplished thus far but don’t over sell it.
